Labor for Our Revolution Statement on SEIU and SB 562

We are extremely disappointed in the statement issued by SEIU California regarding CA Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon’s shelving of SB 562, the California single payer healthcare bill.

Labor for Our Revolution Statement on SEIU and SB 562:

We are extremely disappointed in the statement issued by SEIU California regarding CA Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon’s shelving of SB 562, the California single payer healthcare bill.

While SEIU California leadership claims to “strongly support the concept of single payer,” they are undermining the very vehicle that will allow single payer to become a reality in California, using the attacks on the Affordable Care Act as an excuse to not carry forward. In fact, the threat of Trumpcare makes it all the more pressing and important to protect ourselves on the state level.

Speaker Anthony Rendon needs to allow the bill to proceed through the Assembly committees so that it can be debated and the details can be worked out. It is unconscionable that SEIU, the largest union in California, whose mission is “to improve the lives of working people and their families and lead the way to a more just and humane society” would oppose this.

By all means we should work to protect the ACA from extremist Republicans, but that shouldn’t stop us from also pursuing a cheaper, more efficient healthcare system that would guarantee healthcare to all as a human right. With a Democratic supermajority in the legislature, we have an opportunity to lead the nation. If not now, when? If not us, who?

California Nurses Association has been actively working with the authors of the bill and have already submitted additional amendments that would allow the bill to be completed. Speaker Rendon’s outright rejection of these amendments, and SEIU’s cheerleading of his absurd decision, make us seriously question which side the SEIU California leadership is on. Are they on the side of the people or the insurance executives?

If you are a SEIU member, please contact your union leadership and urge them to denounce Rendon’s latest move and support SB 562. Call 916-442-3838. Sign the petition. If you are a member of another union, urge your union leadership to take a more active role in the Healthy California campaign.

Contact Anthony Rendon, Speaker of the Assembly and tell him to free the bill!
